‘A Sternum Grip on Your Heart’

There was this kid I grew up with that a lot of people were afraid of.. He was different. He was born with a certain difference than most of us but I never thought it was anything to judge him for. His “affliction” was that he was born with a posterior cardiac inconvenience. His heart was fixed on the outside of his right wrist without the protection of a rib cage. He wore his heart on his sleeve and boy did that turn of phrase get kicked around a lot. 

Now, there were things about this affliction that he had to adjust his life around of course; long sleeve shirts were very rare for him as he had to keep a mason jar on top of his exposed organ at all times for protection. Handshakes were always with a non-dominant hand and arm wrestling was very much out the window with this guy. He always had a good humor about it though and the girls always fancied him. He was a very good-looking boy for our school and despite his right arm heart, he did quite well with the female persuasion. It was meeting Jess that did him in though, she changed everything…
